post-impresionism
His own. He was self-taught, but worked in galleries in Paris and London, and so was knowledgeable about western European art of the nineteenth century (and earlier). When he began to paint he based his style on some contemporary Dutch artists, then on some of the Impressionists – but because he came after them he was deemed ‘Post-Impressionist’, along with other artists with whom he had little in common. His style could best be described as ‘Pre-Expressionist’ because most Expressionist artists referred back to him. But, those are all only labels, and therefore of very limited use.
