Candy S. :

I am doing a self portrait – in acrylics. I am copying the style of Van Gogh’s own self portrait, “Bandaged Ear” and I need some tips.

I am not painting in oil as he did so other than using oils what can I do? I want my portrait to look as if it is a partner to Van Gogh’s own piece, as if they were meant to be a pair.

I need advice on mixing colors, painting strokes, texture, lighting, etc…. anything would be helpful. Thanks!

Examine the brush strokes of the painting in detail and try to emulate that.

Look carefully at what colors he used and try to stick to those colors (only put those colors on your palette)

I presume you are using acrylics? Oils would be better as it will give you more time to get it right before it dries.

A partialy severed ear is not necessary

short brush strokes
the colors are somewhat expressionistic.. the colors should not be an exact match to reality.. exaggerate it a bit.. so use blues for shading rather than black etc.
try to add some sort of visual movement with the small brush strokes.. kinda making it look like a zillion tiny wiggly worms are creating the picture =)
use soft edges and curves
